Something I want to knit

I knew if I kept looking at yarn catalogs I would eventually find a kit I just have to make.  There is a pattern that screams up at me from the page and wont let me close the catalog.  I must have this.  I must make this.  It involves techniques I have never tried and a design I can’t get off my mind.  It is even on sale so the cost of the kit is less than the cost of the yarn purchased separately.  Do I buy this and make it mine?  Is there such a thing as to many hats?

We gathered in the park to play with yarn and see who we could get to play along. My best friend doesn’t knit but he came along to tote the heavy things and set up the shade. He is also married to me so he didn’t have much of an option.

I knew two people that would meet me in the park but I invited an entire city.  I guess that is one nice thing about working in radio, you can definitely get the word out with a very loud voice; almost like the town crier of old.

June 18, 2011 Knit in Public

We knit.  We talked.  We crocheted.  We yarn bombed.  We got strangers to tie pompoms to a bench.  We warmed up a turtle and added color to the wind.

All in all I would say a very good day.

Strangers are friends we have yet to meet.

Sometimes you find something you enjoy so much you just have to share it with others. If no one in your circle of family and friends are interested in participating in your obsession it makes no difference.  You know you enjoy this. You know you want to continue to invest your time and energy into learning more about it. You know you cannot give this up.   So you have several choices.  You can continue along in your solitary pursuit or find new people who share your passion.

Knitting is like that for me. Not just yarn and knitting needles but all kinds of fiber arts. I like puzzles and fiber allows me to make all the pieces I could want and if they fit together just right the puzzle makes something wonderful.  I do this mostly on my own.  My friends and family rarely get involved in making things.  I share these wonderful things with strangers. I discuss patterns and yarn, show off pictures of things I have made and all with total strangers on the Internet.  Sometimes I take my latest project out in public and knit with strangers.  Often these people are just friends I have not met yet.  Either way I enjoy my fiber and get to meet new people at the same time.
